Margrethe II 1940-
Queen of Denmark

Born in Copenhagen, she was the daughter of Frederik IX, whom she succeeded in 1972, and she became the first reigning queen in Denmark for nearly 600 years. She was educated at the universities of Copenhagen, Aarhus and Cambridge, the Sorbonne, Paris, and the London School of Economics and became an archaeologist. In 1967 she married a French diplomat, Count Henri de Laborde de Monpezat, now Prince Henrik of Denmark. Their children are the heir apparent, Crown Prince Frederik (1968- ) and Prince Joachim (1969- ). She has published several books which include, in translation, All Men Are Mortal (1981, co-written with Prince Henrik) and The Forest (1989).
