Marius, Gaius 157-86BC
Roman general and politician

He was born in Arpinum, and was consul seven times. He reformed the Roman army and had victories over Jugurtha of Numidia (105BC) in Africa, the Teutones (102) in Gaul, and the Cimbri (101) in north Italy. His final years were dominated by rivalry with the Roman dictator Sulla over the command against Mithridates. Civil war followed, and Marius was forced to flee to Africa. He returned to capture Rome for the Roman politician Cinna from the forces backing Sulla (87) but died soon after.
