Marshall, George Catlett 1880-1959
US soldier, politician, and Nobel Prize winner

He was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. He was commissioned in 1901, and as Chief of Staff (1939-45) he directed the US army throughout World War II. After two years in China as special representative of the President he became Secretary of State (1947-49) and originated the Marshall Aid plan for the postwar reconstruction of Europe (ERP). In 1950 he was made Secretary of Defense by President Truman. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953.
