Massenet, Jules Emile Frédéric 1842-1912
French composer

Born near St Étienne, he studied at the Paris Conservatoire, where he became a professor (1878-96). He made his name with the comic opera Don César de Bazan (1872). Other operas are Hérodiade (1884), Manon (1884), Le Cid (1885), Werther (1892) and Thaïs (1894), and among his other works are oratorios, orchestral suites, music for piano and songs. He wrote Mes Souvenirs (1912, Eng trans, 1919).
