Mondale, Walter F(rederick) 1928-
US politician and lawyer

Born in the small town of Ceylon, Minnesota, he was the son of a Methodist preacher of Norwegian extract. After graduating from the University of Minnesota Law School, he made his reputation as a local Democrat 'machine politician' in his home state, before serving in the US senate between 1964 and 1976. He was selected as Jimmy Carter's running-mate in the 1976 presidential election and served as an active Vice-President between 1977 and 1980. In 1984 he was the Democratic presidential nominee, but was crushingly defeated by the Republican candidate, Ronald Reagan. Following this reverse, Mondale retired from national politics to resume his law practice, but in 1993 he was appointed US ambassador to Japan.
