Montagu, Lady Mary Wortley 1689-1762
English writer

A colourful, eccentric feminist, the eldest daughter of the 5th Earl (later Duke) of Kingston, she was a well-known society hostess, who had a celebrated quarrel with Alexander Pope. From 1716 to 1718 her husband was ambassador in Constantinople (Istanbul) and her letters from there and from Vienna were the basis of her contemporary reputation. After seeing it in Turkey, she was instrumental in introducing vaccination against smallpox into Great Britain.
