Moreau, Gustave 1826-98
French painter and teacher

Born in Paris, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris. An eccentric Symbolist, he painted colourful but usually rather sinister scenes from ancient mythology and the Bible (eg Salome, 1876, which inspired Joris Huysmans to write an enthusiastic description). In 1892 he was appointed Professor of Painting at the École des Beaux-Arts; his pupils included Georges Rouault and Henri Matisse.
