North, Frederick, 2nd Earl of Guilford, known as Lord North 1732-92
English statesman

He entered parliament at the age of 22, became a lord of the treasury, Chancellor of the Exchequer and in 1770 Prime Minister. He was criticized both for failing to avert the Declaration of Independence by the North American colonies (1776) and for failing to defeat them in the subsequent war (1776-83). He resigned in 1782 and entered into a coalition with his former opponent, Charles James Fox, and served with him under the Duke of Portland (William Bentinck) in 1783. He succeeded to the earldom in 1790 on the death of his father Francis, 7th Baron North and 1st Earl of Guilford.
