Oliver, King (Joe) 1885-1938
US cornettist, composer and bandleader
He was born in Abend, Louisiana, and raised in New Orleans. His first instrument was the trombone, and as a youth he played in various parade bands as well as in early jazz groups. He moved to Chicago where in 1922 he formed his 'Hot' Creole Jazz Band; featuring Oliver's cornet partnership with Louis Armstrong, the band made some of the finest recordings of the period. Although he worked as a musician until 1937, he made no recordings after 1931. Some of his compositions, such as 'Dippermouth Blues' and 'Dr Jazz', are part of the standard traditional repertoire.
