Otto IV c.1178-1218
Holy Roman Emperor
The son of Henry the Lion, he grew up at the court of his uncle Richard I of England, who created him Count of Poitou and Duke of Aquitaine. He was elected king (1198) in opposition to Philip of Swabia, against whom he struggled for supremacy for 10 years. Philip's murder (1208) freed him to be crowned emperor (1209), but his subsequent invasion of Sicily lost him the support of Pope Innocent III who raised up Philip's nephew Frederick II as a rival. Otto's cause finally collapsed after his defeat by Philip II of France at Bouvines in 1214, and he was deposed in 1215.
