Palladio, Andrea, originally Andrea di Pietro della Gondola 1508-80
Italian architect

He was born in Vicenza, and trained as a stonemason. He developed a modern Italian architectural style based on classical Roman principles, unlike the ornamentation of the Renaissance. This Palladian style was widely imitated all over Europe, in particular by Inigo Jones and Christopher Wren. Palladio started by remodelling the basilica in Vicenza, and extended his style to villas and palaces and churches, especially in Venice (San Giorgio Maggiore). His Quattro Libri dell' Architetura (1570, Eng trans The Four Books of Architecture, 1715) greatly influenced his successors.
