Italian bibliographer

Born in Brescello in Modena, he was an advocate by training. He fled to Liverpool after the 1821 revolution, and in 1828 became Professor of Italian at University College London. He was appointed assistant librarian (1831), and later chief librarian (1856-66), of the British Museum, where he showed great administrative ability, undertook a new catalogue, and designed the famous Reading Room.
