Paoli, Pasquale de 1725-1807
Corsican patriot

Born in Stretta, he returned from exile in 1755 to take part in the struggle against the island's Genoese overlords. After Corsica's purchase by the French in 1768 he led a renewed rebellion, but was defeated and fled to England. With the French Revolution he was made Governor of Corsica. However, he again grew dissatisfied with French rule and then launched an insurrection against the Convention. This too failed and in 1796 he went to live in exile in England.
