Parry, Sir (Charles) Hubert (Hastings) 1848-1918
English composer

Born in Bournemouth, Hampshire, he was educated at Eton and Oxford. He became a professor at the Royal College of Music in 1883, and Professor of Music at Oxford in 1900. The composer of three oratorios, five symphonies, an opera, and many other works, his best-known works are the anthem 'I Was Glad' (1902), and his unison chorus 'Jerusalem' (1916), sung as an unofficial anthem at the end of each season of Promenade Concerts in London. He published Evolution of the Art of Music (1896), a biography of J S Bach (1909) and The Oxford History of Music, vol 3 (1907).
