Paul III, originally Alessandro Farnese 1468-1549
Italian pope

Born in Canino, in the Papal States, he was made cardinal-deacon in 1493, and was elected pope in 1534. The first of the popes of the Counter-Reformation, he issued the bull of excommunication and deposition against Henry VIII of England in 1538, and also the bull instituting the Order of the Jesuits in 1540. He summoned the Council of Trent in 1545.
