Pears, Sir Peter Neville Luard 1910-86
English tenor

Born in Farnham, Surrey, he was an organ scholar of Hertford College, Oxford, then studied singing (1933-34) at the Royal College of Music. He toured the USA and Europe with Benjamin Britten, and in 1943 joined Sadler's Wells. After the success of Peter Grimes (1945) he joined Britten in the English Opera Group, and was co-founder with him, in 1948, of the Aldeburgh Festival. He was noted for his sympathy with and understanding of modern works.
