English statesman
He took an active part in suppressing the Jacobite Rising of 1715, became Secretary for War in 1724, and was a zealous supporter of Robert Walpole. He took office as Prime Minister in 1743. Notable events during his ministry (reconstructed in 1744 as the 'Broad-bottom administration') were the Austrian Succession War, the Jacobite Rising of 1745, the Financial Bill of 1750, the reform of the calendar, and the Earl of Hardwicke's Marriage Act (1754). His brother was Thomas Pelham-Holles.
