Pergolesi, Giovanni Battista 1710-36
Italian composer

Born in Jesi, he attended the Conservatorio dei Poveri di Gesň Cristo in Naples, becoming a violinist, and was appointed maestro di cappella (1732) to the Prince at Naples. His comic intermezzo La serva padrona (1733, 'The Maid as Mistress') was very popular, and influenced the development of opera bouffe. He wrote much church music, and later left Naples for a Capuchin monastery in Pozzuoli, where he composed his Stabat Mater (1736).
