Perry, Oliver Hazard 1785-1819
US naval officer

Born in South Kingston, Rhode Island, he entered the navy in 1799 and served in the Mediterranean during the Tripolitan War. In the War of 1812 he defeated a British squadron on Lake Erie (1813), a victory he reported with the famous message, 'We have met the enemy and they are ours'. He died of yellow fever on a mission to Venezuela. He was the brother of Matthew Calbraith Perry.
