Peterborough, Charles Mordaunt, 3rd Earl of c.1658-1735
English commander and politician
Between 1674 and 1680 he took part in naval expeditions to the Barbary coast. He was an extreme Whig, and an early intriguer in the overthrow of James VII and II. After the Revolution he rose high under the new king who made him Earl of Monmouth, but later he opposed William III and his policies and in 1697 was committed to the Tower for three months. In 1705, during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14), now as the Earl of Peterborough, he took 4,000 troops to Spain. He defeated a French army, but disagreements with his colleagues, and outbreaks of his violent temper led to his recall to England (March 1707) and the virtual end of his military career.
