Petrie, Sir (William Matthew) Flinders 1853-1942
English archaeologist and Egyptologist

Born in Charlton, Kent, he was educated privately. He surveyed Stonehenge (1874-77), but turned from 1881 entirely to Egyptology, beginning by surveying the pyramids and temples of Giza and excavating the mounds of Tanis and Naucratis. The author of over 100 books, and renowned for his energy and spartan tastes, he became the first Edwards Professor of Archaeology at London (1892-1933), and continued excavating in Egypt and Palestine until well into his eighties.
