Of Arab descent, he came to power (244) by causing the death of Gordian III. He celebrated the 1,000th anniversary of the founding of Rome with a mammoth secular games (248), the last time they were celebrated in Roman history. He also founded the city of Philipopolis. His reign was plagued by usurpations, and he was killed in battle by Decius, who succeeded him.
