Plantagenet
Angevin family name

In 1154 they succeeded to the throne of England through Henry II. Plante-geneste ('Broom') was the nickname of Geoffrey, Count of Anjou, husband of Matilda, daughter of Henry I. The first to use Plantaginet (sic) as his family name was Richard, Duke of York (1460), in laying claim to the crown. But the sovereigns called Plantagenet kings are Henry II; Richard I; John; Henry III; Edward I, Edward II and Edward III; Richard II; Henry IV, Henry V and Henry VI; Edward IV and Edward V; and Richard III. The legitimate male line ended (1499) with the execution of Edward, Earl of Warwick, grandson of Richard, Duke of York.
