Polycrates d.c.522BC
Tyrant of Samos

He conquered several nearby islands and towns on the Asiatic mainland and was one of the most conspicuous and powerful Greek tyrants of his time. He made an alliance with Amasis II, King of Egypt, but later broke it by giving support to the Persian King Cambyses II in his invasion of Egypt. He successfully resisted an attack from Spartans, Corinthians and disaffected Samians, but was later lured to the mainland by Oroetes, a Persian satrap, seized, and crucified.
