Pons, Jean-Louis 1761-1831
French astronomer

Born in Peyre, near Dauphine, at the age of 28 he became the porter and door-keeper at the Marseilles Observatory, and after tuition he became the astronome adjoint in 1813. In 1819 he was appointed as director of the Lucca Observatory in northern Italy, and in 1825 he became director of the Florence Observatory. His main interest was comets, and the 37 comets which he discovered amounted to three-quarters of all the comets discovered between 1801 and 1827.
