Pullman, George Mortimer 1831-97
US inventor and businessman

He was born in Brocton, New York. A cabinetmaker by trade, he became a contractor in Chicago and a storekeeper in Colorado before designing a 'Pullman' railroad sleeping-car (patented in 1864 and 1865). The Pullman Palace Car Company was formed in 1867, and in 1880 he founded 'Pullman City' for his workers, since absorbed by Chicago.
