Queensberry, Sir John Sholto Douglas, 8th Marquis of 1844-1900
Scottish representative peer, and patron of boxing

In 1867 he supervised the formulation by John Graham Chambers of new rules to govern boxing, since known as the 'Queensberry Rules'. In 1895 he was unsuccessfully sued for criminal libel by Oscar Wilde, of whose friendship with his son, Lord Alfred Douglas, he disapproved, and it was his allegations of homosexuality that led in turn to Wilde's trial and imprisonment.
