Renoir, Jean 1894-1979
US film director
Born in Paris, France, son of Pierre Auguste Renoir, he won the Croix de Guerre in World War I. He turned from scriptwriting to filmmaking, his version of Zola's Nana (1926), La grande illusion (1937, Grand Illusion), La Bęte humaine (1939, The Human Beast), La Carrozza d'Oro (1953, The Golden Coach), in Italy, and Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe (1959, Picnic on the Grass), all of which are among the masterpieces of the cinema. He left France in 1941 for the USA and became a naturalized US citizen. His later films include Le Caporal épinglé (1962, The Elusive Corporal) and Le Petit théâtre de Jean Renoir (1969).
