French soldier

Born in Vendôme, he fought at the Siege of Maestricht, and distinguished himself at Minorca in 1756. In 1780 he was sent out with 6,000 men to support the Americans, and in 1781 provided effective help at Yorktown. On his return to France (1783) he served with the Napoleonic army, and was made a marshal in 1803.
