Romney, George 1734-1802
English painter

Born in Dalton-in-Furness, Lancashire, he specialized in portraiture from 1757, and was greatly influenced by Sir Joshua Reynolds and to a lesser extent Thomas Gainsborough. He went to London in 1762. Most of the leading aristocratic and cultural figures of his day sat for him, including Emma, Lady Hamilton. His technique was ostentatiously fluent and elegant. In 1798 he returned to Kendal.
