Röhm or Roehm, Ernst 1887-1934
German soldier and Nazi politician

Born in Munich, he became an early supporter of Hitler and played a vital role in fostering good relations between the Nazi Party and the Bavarian authorities up until November 1923. He was the organizer and commander of the SA or stormtroopers ('Brownshirts') during the mid-1920s and from 1931 to 1934; however, his plans to pursue policies independently of the NSDAP (German National Socialist Workers Party) and to increase the SA's power led to his summary execution on Hitler's orders.
