Saint Vincent, John Jervis, Earl of 1735-1823
English naval commander
Born in Stone, Staffordshire, he entered the navy in 1749 and distinguished himself in the Quebec expedition of 1759. In 1778 he fought in the action off Brest, and in 1782 captured the Pégase. He commanded a successful expedition against the French in the West Indies (1793), and as admiral commanded the Mediterranean fleet in 1795. In 1797 off Cape St Vincent, he defeated the French, Dutch and Spanish fleets who were preparing to invade England. His dispositions led to Nelson's victory at the Battle of the Nile (1798). As commander of the Channel fleet he subdued the spirit of sedition, and was First Lord of the Admiralty (1801-04).

A wildcard is a special character you can use to replace one or more characters in a word. There are two types of wildcard. The first is a question mark ?, which matches a single character. The second is an asterisk *, which matches zero or more characters. The two kinds of wildcard can be mixed in a single search.
