Saul 11th century BC
Biblical ruler

A Benjamite, the son of Kish, he was the first king elected by the Israelites; his name means 'asked for'. He conquered the Philistines, Ammonites and Amalekites, but became intensely jealous of David, his son-in-law, and was ultimately at feud with the priestly class. At length Samuel secretly anointed David king. Saul fell in battle with the Philistines at Mount Gilboa.
