Saxe, Maurice, Comte de, also called Marshal de Saxe 1696-1750
Marshal of France
Born in Goslar, the illegitimate son of Augustus II, at the age of 12 he ran off to join the army of the Duke of Marlborough under Prince Eugčne of Savoy in Flanders. He fought against the Turks in Hungary, and in 1726, elected Duke of Courland, he maintained himself against the Russians and Poles. In the War of the Polish Succession (1733-38) he opposed his half-brother Augustus III and in 1744, as Marshal of France, he commanded the French army in Flanders. In 1745 he defeated the Duke of Cumberland at Fontenoy and retired two years later. His treatise on the art of war, Mes Ręveries, was published in 1751.

Search Tip
