Schwarzkopf, H Norman, known as Stormin' Norman 1934-
US general
Born in Trenton, New Jersey, into a military family, he became a cadet at the age of 10 and joined the US Army after graduating from West Point. After distinguished service in the Vietnam War and in the 1986 US invasion of Grenada, he became a four-star general in 1988. He was given overall command of the coalition land forces in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm following the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in November 1990, and led the offensive that in just 100 hours brought an end to the Gulf War with minimal casualties among the coalition forces. He retired from the army on his return from the Gulf in 1991 and became an international consultant on modern warfare. He also wrote an autobiography, It Doesn't Take a Hero (1992).
