Roman soldier

He was born in Nursia in the Sabine country. He fought with Marius in Gaul (102BC) and supported him against Sulla. In 83 he became praetor and was given Spain as his province. In 80 he led a successful rising of natives and Roman exiles against Rome, holding out against Sulla's commanders (including Pompey) for eight years until he was murdered by his chief lieutenant.
