Seymour, Lynn 1939-
British dancer

Born in Wainwright, Alberta, Canada, she trained in Vancouver, spending two years at the Royal Ballet School in London, and making her debut in 1956 with the Sadler's Wells branch of the company. She is best known for her passionate interpretations of the choreography of Kenneth MacMillan and Frederick Ashton. MacMillan cast her first in The Burrow (1958), and after that she was frequently teamed with Christopher Gable. Her dancing career was a volatile one and had its disappointments, as when she was asked to step down in favour of Margot Fonteyn for MacMillan's premi�re of Romeo and Juliet (1965). She was acclaimed, however, in Ashton's Five Brahms Waltzes in the Manner of Isadora Duncan and A Month in the Country (both 1976). In 1978 she spent an unsuccessful season as director of the Bavarian Opera in Munich. She returned to the stage as Tatiana in Onegin and the mother in Gable's A Simple Man (both 1988). While best known as a dancer, she has choreographed several pieces, Rashomon (1976) and Wolfi (1987) being perhaps the best known. Her book Lynn (1984) describes her life as an international ballet dancer.
