Shaw, Artie, originally Arthur Arshawsky 1910-
US bandleader and clarinettist

Born in New York City, he took up writing and numerous music jobs before achieving success as a swing band leader, notably with 'Begin the Beguine' (1938), 'Star Dust' (1940), and 'Moonglow' (1941); he rivalled Benny Goodman as a clarinet soloist. He married eight times, and his wives included the actresses Lana Turner, Ava Gardner, and Evelyn Keyes. He retired from performing in 1955.
