English naval commander

He served against the Dutch and in the Mediterranean, burned four corsair galleys at Tripoli (1676), and commanded a ship at the battle in Bantry Bay (1689). In 1690 he took part in the battle off Beachy Head, and in 1692 he supported Edward Russell at La Hogue, burning 20 enemy ships. With George Rooke he took Gibraltar in 1704. In 1705 he was made rear admiral of England and took part with Charles Mordaunt, Earl of Peterborough in the capture of Barcelona. On the voyage home his ship struck a rock off the Scilly Isles and sank. He was buried in Westminster Abbey.
