Smith, Sir William Sidney 1764-1840
English naval commander
Born in Westminster, London, he entered the navy in 1777, and in 1780 was promoted to the rank of lieutenant for his bravery at Cape St Vincent. He acted as adviser to the King of Sweden (1790-92), and was decorated - hence his nickname 'the Swedish Knight'. In 1793 he aided Samuel, 1st Viscount Hood to burn the shops and arsenal at Toulon. In 1798 he was sent as plenipotentiary to Constantinople (Istanbul), and in 1799 raised Napoleon's siege of Acre. He aided Ralph Abercromby in Egypt, destroyed the Turkish fleet off Abydos (1807), blockaded the Tagus, and became vice-admiral of the Blue in 1810.
