Snowdon, Antony Charles Robert Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of 1930-
English photographer

Born in London and educated at Eton and Cambridge, he started as a photographic assistant in the studios of Baron (Nahum). He was married to HRH Princess Margaret (1960-78), and was created Earl of Snowdon in 1961. He became a freelance photojournalist in 1951 and an artistic adviser to many publications, designing the aviary of London Zoo in 1965. A Vogue photographer since 1954, his informal portraits of the famous have often captured unusual facets of character, especially those taken during stage performances. Recently, he has sympathetically recorded the plight of the handicapped and disabled, both old and young, and has produced documentaries for television on similar themes. He was the presenter of the television series Snowdon on Camera (1981) and was awarded the Royal Photographic Society Silver Progress Medal in 1985. His publications include Stills 1983-1987 (1987) and Public Appearances 1987-1991 (1991).
