Stein, Charlotte von, née von Schardt 1742-1827
German writer

She was a lady-in-waiting at the Weimar court, and in 1764 married Friedrich von Stein, the Duke of Saxe-Weimar's Master of the Horse. In 1775, she met Goethe, who fell in love with her. Their friendship was broken suddenly (1788), but was renewed before her death. She was the inspiration for many of his love poems and plays. She herself wrote dramas such as Rino (1776), a play about Goethe, and Dido (1792, published 1867), a prose tragedy lamenting the end of their affair.
