Taft, Robert Alfonso 1889-1953
US lawyer and Republican politician

The son of President William Howard Taft, he was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and studied law at Yale and Harvard. In 1917 he became counsellor to the American Food Administration in Europe under Herbert Hoover. Elected senator in 1938, he co-sponsored the Taft-Hartley Act (1947) directed against the power of the trade unions and the 'closed shop'. A prominent isolationist, he failed three times (1940, 1948, 1952) to secure Republican nomination for the presidency.
