Talbot, Sir John, 1st Earl Shrewsbury c.1390-1453
English soldier
A distinguished soldier in France during Henry VI's reign, he was successful in many engagements until he was finally checked at Orleans by Joan of Arc (1429), and taken prisoner at Patay (1429), remaining a captive until 1431. He had further successes in France, and was made Marshal of France. He was Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland twice (1414-19, 1445). Created Earl of Salop (1422), Earl of Shrewsbury (1442) and Earl of Waterford (1455), he was killed at Castillon, after taking Bordeaux.
