Thorfinn, properly Thorfinnur Karesefni fl.1000
Icelandic explorer

Around 1000AD he led an expedition of colonists from Greenland, which sailed along the north-east coasts of North America, which had previously been discovered and explored by Leif the Lucky. He attempted to found a Norse colony in an area called 'Vínland' (Wineland), somewhere to the south of Newfoundland. The venture was abandoned after three years because of hostility from the native inhabitants. The story is told in two Icelandic sagas, Eiriks saga rauđa ('Saga of Eric') and Grćnlendinga saga ('Tale of the Greenlanders').
