Tibullus, Albius c.54-19BC
Roman elegiac poet

Believed to have been born in Gabii, he became friends with the poet-statesman, M Valerius Messala, and joined his staff. In 30BC Augustus commissioned Tibullus to crush a revolt in Aquitania, and although he served with distinction in the campaign, he never liked life as a soldier as much as he enjoyed Roman society. His gentle elegiac love poems to his mistresses persuaded Quintilian to place Tibullus at the head of Roman elegiac poets.
