Tirpitz, Alfred Friedrich von 1849-1930
German admiral

Born in Küstrin, Brandenburg, he joined the Prussian navy in 1865. He commanded the Asiatic squadron (1896-97), and as Secretary of State for the Imperial German Navy (1897-1916), he raised a fleet to challenge British supremacy of the seas, and acted as its commander (1914-16). He advocated unrestricted submarine warfare, and resigned when this policy was, initially, opposed in government circles (to be implemented later, on 1 February 1917). He later sat in the Reichstag (1924-28).
