Ulrika Eleonora 1688-1741
Queen of Sweden

The younger sister of Karl XII, she was born in Stockholm, married to Prince Frederick of Hesse (1715), and was elected queen in 1718 after her brother's death. A new constitution, however, inaugurated the so-called Era of Liberty (1718-71), and saw the abolition of royal absolutism, giving power to the Riksdag (parliament). Ulrika was so displeased that she abdicated (1720) in favour of her husband, who ascended the throne as Fredrik I.
