French writer

Born in Marseilles, he fought in the religious wars of France and later settled in Savoy. He was the author of the pastoral romance, Astrée (1610-27, 'Astrea'), which is regarded as the first French novel. He was killed at Villefranche-sur-Mer during the war between Savoy and Genoa.
