Valentinian I AD321-75
Roman emperor

Born in Cibalis, Pannonia, the son of an army officer, he rose rapidly in rank under Constantius and Julian, and on the death of Emperor Jovian (AD331-64) was chosen by the army as his successor in 364. He resigned the East to his brother Valens, and he himself governed the West with watchful care, especially strengthening the Rhine fortification, until his death.
